The Word : BLACKNESS

I’ve never been a fan of Punk. Too happy. I like darker things. Of course I knew about Misfits, who doesn’t, with all those 14 years old  wannabe Emo kids wandering in shopping malls wearing Misfits t-shirts. And probably having never heard a single song from them. Or their fan base is fantastically huge.

But well, I knew the name, and as most people, the skull, without knowing anything else. But someday, shit happens, good or bad, I randomly found Misfits pictures. Pretty gruesome. In the best way possible. They were completely mean and horrific, each of them. I had to listen to that stuff.

Then finally I set my ears on some Misfits. Not that bad. Pretty damn good. Horror Punk got me. But then again, the same problem came up : still a bit too happy for me. But the voice. The voice was properly something incredible. I was falling for the voice, song after song. The voice of Danzig.

Danzig is a legend. Danzig does not have only a voice, he got so much charisma that people can’t just like him. Either you hate Danzig, or you absolutely worship him. Guess which side I’m on.

Danzig music is and had always been loud and heavy as a hammer. In 2010 he released his latest album, Deth Red Sabaoth, and as usual this album strikes the blackest of the beats, like only Danzig can. It starts like a ride to Hell and never let you escape. It’s like breathing a burning air, seeing only red everywhere. Songs are very different from one another, but still creating altogether this tornado that goes deep and deeper down still. The blackness gets darker on songs like “Black Candy”, which beats deep and hard, mercifully, or “Ju Ju Bone”, an electric sex magick track typically Danzig-like, in line with “The Devil’s Plaything” or “Lick the Blood off My Hands”. For Danzig can’t help it. His music is sexy as hell. And I swear you’ll sweat on this album like on older ones.

Danzig has an epic career behind him and many great albums. Metallers are purist, and, everyone knows it: things were better before. What things? All the things.

Well, sometimes, some things are just as good as they used to be.
